Melasma vs pigmentation: why diagnosis matters
Reviewed for clinical consistency with Dr. Divyanshee Bishnoi’s team at Suncity Dentaglow, Shastri Nagar, Jodhpur.
Not all dark patches are the same. Sun spots and melasma need different plans—melasma often needs medical care and strict SPF, not aggressive laser alone.
Different problems, different tools
Sun-induced spots and some post-inflammatory marks may suit staged pigmentation laser after assessment. Melasma is often hormone- and sun-sensitive; wrong settings or unprotected UV can worsen the patchy mask-like pattern.
At Suncity Dentaglow we diagnose first. Peels, medical topicals, facials, or a laser-sparing plan may join or replace energy devices depending on the pattern—especially on Indian skin types common in our Jodhpur practice.
Why Jodhpur sun changes the playbook
Daily broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable for any pigment plan here. Hats, shade, and reapplication matter more than another impulsive laser pass before a wedding.
If you work outdoors or drive long hours in daylight, say so—maintenance and timing must match real life, not clinic-brochure life.
Hormones, pregnancy, and medications
Pregnancy-related pigment and hormone shifts need careful counselling. Some medicines increase sun sensitivity. Bring your history so we do not treat you like a generic “fairness package” patient.
Read pigmentation laser, aftercare, can pigmentation return, and the broader pigmentation treatment guide. Use the laser treatment hub if you are comparing hair and scar laser separately.
Quick differences
| Sun spots (often) | Melasma (often) | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | UV / age spots | Hormones + UV |
| Pattern | More focal / discrete | Often blotchy / mask-like |
| Laser role | Selected cases after diagnosis | Cautious / wider plan |
| SPF | Essential | Essential + ongoing |
Patient questions
Can one laser package fix both melasma and sun spots?
Not safely as a blanket promise. Diagnosis decides whether laser, peels, medical care, or a mix is appropriate.
Will stopping SPF after laser keep my results?
No—especially in Jodhpur. Unprotected UV is a common reason pigment returns or worsens.
Is melasma curable?
It is often managed rather than permanently erased. Honest clinics talk control and maintenance, not miracle clearance.
